The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim remains a milestone game more than five years after its initial release. And since it doesn’t look like we’re getting another entry in Bethesda’s RPG series for a while longer (no, Elder Scrolls Online doesn’t count), even the most dedicated Skyrim player might be looking for ways to get some new life out of the original game.
Fortunately, modders have been making vanilla Skyrim better since the game came out. And we’re not just talking about improving the graphics, either (though graphics mods are awesome). At this point, there are mods that add new characters, questlines, enemies, spells, and even new areas to explore. If Skyrim was starting to feel a little dull after five years, these mods will make it feel fresh again.
What You’ll Need
This guide is for the original PC version of Skyrim, not the Special Edition. The original game has the best selection of mods. Some might be available for the Special Edition too (and a few are also on the Xbox One and PS4 versions), but the original PC game is still the way to go if you want to customize your experience.
RELATED:How to Install Skyrim and Fallout 4 Mods with Nexus Mod Manager
In addition, some of the more advanced mods can’t be found on the Steam Workshop, which is the de facto repository (and the easiest to use for beginners). For more complex fare, you’ll want to upgrade to the third-party Nexus Mod Manager, which we’ve shown you how to use here. You might want to start with Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE), a prerequisite for many advanced game mods. Lots of them need the Mod Configuration Menu as well.
A Better User Interface
The user interface in Skyrim is designed to be usable with both a mouse and keyboard and a standard console controller. Regrettably, that means it’s not particularly good at either of them, including a lot of tedious scrolling and no real options for organization. Enter SkyUI, the overhauled custom user interface. With this installed you can search your inventory by text, organize items by weight when you’re over encumbered, colored icons for item types, and integration across all shop and lootable menus, too.
New Followers
The follower system is a staple of Bethesda RPGs. But most of the companions you can recruit in Skyrim are either fairly limited characters designed to be battle companions, or tied to specific quests and unavailable for the longer game. There are a wide variety of add-on followers available as game mods that insert new characters specifically designed to be interesting or useful. Some of the best examples include custom-recorded voice lines from the community, full backstories and quests that flesh out the character, and unique equipment to make them stand out from the polygonal crowd. Inigo the good-natured Khajit wanderer and Vilja the generational warrior are good places to start.
Better Dragons
The massive dragon battles in Skyrim differentiate it from the rest of The Elder Scrolls, and they were a huge selling point before the game’s release. But after a few dozen hours, dragons cease to be any particular challenge, and there are only a handful of different types. To add some spice to Tamriel’s skies, try the Diverse Dragons Collection, an omnibus mod that combines custom dragons from a bunch of different creators. These souped-up beasts come with custom attacks and creature models, special effects, and lots of combat modifiers that can make them a real challenge. Speaking of which, if all you want is more epic dragon fights, you can try Deadly Dragons (which can be combined with Diverse Dragons Collection). If you want even more motivation to become a legendary dragon slayer, try a “souls for perks” mod, which lets you trade a leveled amount of dragon souls for skill improvements instead of the standard dragon shouts.
More Magic and Tougher Combat
Skyrim’s magic and combat aren’t its best features—games like Dark Souls and Shadow of Mordor have it beaten dead to rights when it comes to the sheer mechanical joy of fighting. Modders, thankfully, have expanded both of these areas. Duel makes combat more deadly, making it more important to dodge attacks and find the right time to strike rather than simply tanking or blocking all damage. You’ll have to use actual tactics in each and every fight… something most Skyrim players probably haven’t done since they maxed out their Smithing score. There’s not much that can be done for Skyrim’s magic system except expand the spells and effects, but several mods do that to a spectacular degree, including Midas Magic Evolved and Apocalypse Magic.
Explore New Lands
Easily the most ambitious Skyrim mods are the ones that add entirely new areas to the game, or transform existing ones with a ton of new content. Falskaar is surely the biggest of the big, adding a whole new island to the land of Skyrim brimming with new characters, new quests, and a new storyline to follow. It’s full of dozens of custom voiced characters, new equipment, spells, and books, and even custom-made music. There’s also Enderal: The Shards of Order, a total conversion that essentially creates an original fantasy RPG using Skyrim as its backbone. With a completely customized continent and dozens of hours’ worth of quests and gameplay, you can think of this as a community-made companion game (that just happens to be free). A few other examples include Moonpath to Elsewyr, The Forgotten City, and The Cyrodiil Frontier.
…Or Just Change the Wallpaper
There are innumerable mods out there that are made and installed just for fun, like the one that replaces dragons with Thomas the Tank Engine or adds a custom “IKEA-born” race. But for a bit of fun that doesn’t actually change Skyrim‘s core gameplay, I recommend Uncle Sheogorath’s custom loading screens. This mod replaces the flavor text that appears whenever you go to a new area with sarcastic and goofy alternative descriptions. It’s a great way to get a quick chuckle without messing up the balance of the rest of the game.

The single greatest benefit of owning The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on PC is the plethora of modding opportunities available to you. Nearly every facet of the game can be altered in some way, which practically washes away any possible flaw or issue you might have with it. Felt the game was too easy? Add a difficulty mod, making your experience more akin to Dark Souls. Feel there isn't enough content in the game? There's dozens of free expansion packs available. Want the game darker, brighter, prettier, more immersive? There are mods for all of those things too. These mods can radically alter the experience, crafting an RPG that meets the needs of any individual player. Looking for mods to install is like going to the store for your favourite game and finding hundreds of DLC packs tailored specifically to you. On sale. Like for free. Forever. From new maps and quests to minor tweaks and new armour sets, the additions you can make to your game are innumerable, allowing for an infinite amount of customisation. Detractors of modding might say that it's better to play these games 'The way they're meant to be played', but it could be argued that a fully modded Skyrim isthe way it's meant to be played, as if the developers could have made the game bigger, better, and more beautiful, they would have done, right?

The best Skyrim mods to update the appearance of vanilla armour sets and add new high quality sets to your game
Hi and welcome to my latest hub on Skyrim, the fifth instalment of the Elder Scrolls series by Bethesda. In today’s hub, I am going to look at the best armour mods available for Skyrim.
The calculation itself might be quite complex and requires lots of brackets, sub-calculations etc making it prone to typing errors or simply takes you ages to put together each time you need it.What if you could create your own function with all the calculations built in and all you had to do was enter the basic data? Excel text function excel 2013. You may well have a calculation that is specific to your company or job role and you use it on a daily basis.
- Firstly, I look at improving the look of the existing vanilla armour sets by installing mods with higher definition textures and making them fit newer player character body shapes
- Secondly, I will examine some of the best mods available that add new lore friendly and high quality armour sets to Skyrim
I have a companion hub that introduces mods for weapons that similarly will:
- Significantly improve the look of all of the vanilla weapons in game
- Introduce beautiful high quality new weapons sets that will add hundreds of beautiful new weapons including fantastic swords, stunning bows, staffs, axes, spears and maces
- All mods are lore friendly and integrate seamlessly with the existing vanilla weapons in Skyrim
My hub on weapons can be found here:
All mods are available for download from the Skyrim Nexus Mods website, http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim. In order to get the best out of Nexus, I have written a guide to this website which can be found here:
I would recommend using one of the following two Mod Management tools for Skyrim, Nexus Mod Manager or Mod Organizer
Nexus Mod Manager is an excellent tool which offers:
- Single click downloads
- A very user friendly and easy to use user interface
- You can easily and quickly install and uninstall all your mods
- This tool will automatically check all your mods for available updates and also update your mod load order automatically
I have a hub that introduces Nexus Mod Manager which can be found here:
Mod Organizer is a more advanced tool that as well as installing and managing your mods:
- Also allows you to clean saved games and organize your mod order
- It installs mods more cleanly than Nexus Mod Manager (each mod is installed into its own folder) and is suitable for people who are more familiar with installing mods or are having problems getting mods to install correctly with Nexus Mod Manager
- You can also create Profiles that have different mods installed and ini files with different settings to allow you to test risk free
My hub on Mod Organizer can be found here:
How to best install mods to ensure that Skyrim looks exactly how you want it to look
Best Workshop Mods For Skyrim
I thoroughly recommended that when looking to improve an aspect of Skyrim using mods that you:
- Start with a mod that improves the look of all vanilla content
- Next installing mods improving specific aspects of it further
- Check when installing mods for patches that allow your installed mods to work together better
- Then add mods that add new things to the game
I always download all the mods that I like the look of and think that improve a specific aspect of the game. Then I think of the best order using the rules I outlined above.
Next, test each mod in turn by playing the game. Sometimes you will love the look of the mod from screenshots but it simply doesn’t look right to you in your game. Uninstall it immediately before adding any more mods. This way, you won’t be in the middle of a game thinking “I don’t like the look of that, wish I could get rid of it but I don’t remember which mod it is from”. Believe me, I have been there and it is really frustrating!
Once you have Skyrim looking exactly how you want it, be very careful when adding new mods and only use mods that introduce new content or that will definitely work with your installed mods to ensure that you don’t have to re-install mods to fix any issues the new mod may introduce.
The aMidianBorn Book of Silence mod by CaBaL an excellent mod for upgrading vanilla armour sets in Skyrim
The first mod we will look at is the aMidianBorn Book of Silence mod written by CaBal. This excellent mod improves the graphics of all vanilla armour sets by using higher quality textures. All are lore friendly and built from scratch. You can see the increase in detail in the guards armour in the picture below.
In all sixteen armour sets are replaced. There is also a patch (aMidianBorn Textures For Immersive Armors and Lore-Friendly Armor Pack - Full Set Armour) that allows some of the textures from CaBals mod to be used in Immersive Armours which is the next mod we will look at.
Immersive Armors mod for Skyrim by hothtrooper44 to add new high quality armour sets to Skyrim
This is a truly wonderful mod from a very talented modder. It adds 22 new armour sets, three new shields and a whole array of other additions including eye patches, scarves and even a kilt that are both lore friendly and balanced to the game. All objects are can be crafted, upgraded and have enchantments added to them. In game they can be found as quest rewards, in loot and being worn by Non Player Characters.
Calientes Vanilla Outfits for CBBE mod by Caliente for Skyrim to give your female player character a curvier figure
For those of us using Caliente’s stunning Calientes Female Body Mod Big Bottom Edition - CBBE to give our player character a curvier body shape, this mod is a must. It changes the meshes for all vanilla armour sets so that they fit your player character better. It will remove any seams or clipping that you may otherwise experience.
Note:This mod will only change meshes to allow the armour to look right with the changed body shape, no textures are changed so it will not overwrite any of the mods you install to upgrade or enhance the appearance of your armour in game.
If you don’t have CBBE and would like to learn more about it, I have a hub that covers customising the appearance of your player character in great detail which can be found here:
XAC - Xenius Armour Compilation an armour compilation mod for Skyrim to add beautiful new armour
The last compilation mod I would like to introduce is Xenius’s XAC - Xenius Armour Compilation mod. This mod introduces four armour sets for female player characters. The sets are:
- Blade Dancer
- Royal Scout
- Lady Bulwark
- Maiden Vagabond
As you can see from the screenshot, they are beautiful armour sets that allow your female character to still look feminine wearing armour without it being too revealing and looking out of place in wintery Skyrim.
Armour mods that add new high quality armour sets to Skyrim
Now, we will look at some of the best mods for Skyrim that add a single armour set to the game. As with all the other mods, these are lore friendly and give Skyrim a consistent look and feel and do not break your immersion when you are playing the game.
The first is Crimson Ranger Armor by Patobek. This mod adds a new armour set designed specifically for Rangers. It is designed for both male and female characters and as you can see from the screenshot below, the level of detail is impressive and the armour looks lovely. The armour is also craftable. Be sure to install both the mod and the fix when installing this mod.
The second mod I recommend is actually a shield mod. Skyforge Shields by Dreogan. This mod allows you to craft shields at the Skyforge or purchase some of them from Eorlund Graymane. As you can see from the screenshot, these are truly gorgeous shields. The mod author recommends that you install the mod Dual Sheath Redux if you want to be able to wear your shield on your back.
Next, Warchief Armor by the author of Immersive Amors, hothtrooper44. This standalone armour set is for a Barbarian character and exactly what you would expect a Barbarian to wear in the colder climate of Skyrim.
I would recommend also checking out the authors other standalone armour sets particularly the Spellbinder and Vagabond sets if they fit the character that you are playing. As you would expect from a modder of hothtrooper44’s ability all their mods are of a superb standard are totally lore friendly.
Bosmer Armor Pack by Maty743 is the last mod I will look at today. The Bosmer or Wood Elves in Skyrim are excellent hunters and archers and the armour sets (five in all) introduced in this mod are wonderful. They can be crafted only using Elven forges and are made entirely of leather and bone. The detail, as you would expect from the Elves is wonderful and if you play a Bosmer character I cannot recommend this mod enough.
Conclusion
Today, I have continued my series looking to improve the look of vanilla objects in Skyrim and also expanding it using mods. I only include mods that not only look beautiful, but also fit with the overall look and feel of Skyrim and do not break your immersion. We have looked first of all at.
- The aMidianBorn Book of Silence mod by CaBaL that improves all the vanilla armour textures to make all vanilla armour look much more detailed
- Immersive armors by hothtrooper44 adds an enormous number of lore friendly armour sets (22 in all)
- Calientes Vanilla Outfits for CBBE mod byCaliente allows your armour to look good on your Player Character if you take advantage of the curvier body shapes offered by CBBE
Finally, we looked at a collection of mods that introduce:

Which of the mods featured in this hub is your favourite?

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a fantastic game right out of the box, but the reason so many people still play it so many years after its initial release is the massive modding community. Skyrim mods can do almost anything, from drastically improving the graphics, to creating new quests and non-player characters (NPCs), to something as simple as making the maps more attractive.
ModdingSkyrim and Skyrim: Special Edition isn't too difficult, but it can be a somewhat confusing process. Since there are two different versions of the game, and Skyrim is available on so many platforms, there are multiple different ways to find and install Skyrim mods.
What Version of Skyrim Do You Have?
There are two versions of Skyrim, and the game is also available on a number of different platforms. Both versions can be modded, but the only platforms that are compatible with mods are PS4, Xbox One, Windows PC, and Steam.
The version of the game, and the platform you are using, will affect the process you need to go through if you want to mod your game.
Here are the main sources of mods for Skyrim and the platforms that you can use with them:
- Nexus Mods: Windows, Steam
- Steam Workshop: Steam
Here are the three main sources of mods for Skyrim: Special Edition and the platforms that you can use with them:
- Bethesda: Windows, Steam, PS4, Xbox One
- Nexus Mods: Windows, Steam
- Steam Workshop: Steam
Mods are not compatible with the PS3, Xbox 360, or Nintendo Switch versions of Skyrim.
How to Install Skyrim: Special Edition Mods for PC, PS4, and Xbox One
Skyrim: Special Edition is a version of Skyrim that is available for PC and consoles, and it is designed to make the modding process very easy. In fact, Bethesda actually hosts a huge variety of mods on their own site, and you don't need to download any additional software to use them.
The first part of this process is to create an account on Bethesda.net and locate some mods that you are interested in. Here are the steps that you need to take:
- Navigate to Bethesda.net.
- Create an account, and log in.
- Navigate to the Bethesda.net Skyrim mods page.
- Click on any mod that you want to install.
- Click Add to library.
Once you have found some Skyrim: Special Edition mods that you want to install, the rest of the process takes place in the game. You will need to tie your accounts together, choose some of the mods you found, and install them.
The next step in modding Skyrim: Special Edition is to connect your Xbox Live, PlayStation Network (PSN), or Steam account to your Bethesda.net account and install your mods:
- Launch Skyrim: Special Edition on your Xbox One, PlayStation 4, or Steam.
- Select Mods.
- Enter the email address you used when you created your Bethesda.net account, and select Create Account or press Enter. You need to select Create Account even though you already have an account. As long as you enter the same email you used to set up your Bethesda.net account, you will then get the option to log in.
- Enter your Bethesda.net username and password, and select Accept or hit Enter.
- Select a mod that you want to install.
- Select Download, and wait for the mod to download.
- Select Back or press Escape to return to the main mods screen.
- Repeat steps 5-7 for any additional mods.
- Select Back or press Escape, and the mods will load.
Some mods do not work well with other mods. If your game does not operate normally, try adjusting the load order by selecting Load Order from the main mods screen. If that doesn't work, you may need to disable one or more mods by clicking on the mod and then clicking on Disable.
Understanding Skyrim: Special Edition Mod Limits
Depending on your platform, there may be limits on how many mods you can download and install. The number of mods you can install will also be lower if you don't have enough free space on your console.
Here are the limits you might run up against:
- PS4: No more than 100 or 1GB worth of active mods.
- XBox One: No more than 150 or 5GB of active mods.
- Steam: No hard limit imposed by Steam. Skyrim itself has a hard coded limit of 255 mods.
The space limitations are placed by Microsoft and Sony, while the limit on the number of mods you can install can be placed by either the console manufacturer or Bethesda.
The limitation on the number of mods can change from time to time if Bethesda decides that Skyrim is capable of handling more, or less, mods while still remaining stable.
How to Install Skyrim or Skyrim: Special Edition Mods on PC Using Nexus Mods
The easiest way to find and install mods for the original version of Skyrim on PC is a program called Nexus Mod Manager, which has an associated website. This program is also compatible with Skyrim: Special Edition and many other games. Modders upload their work to the website, where users are able to search for interesting mods, download them, and then install them using the Nexus Mod Manager program
Before you can use Nexus Mod Manager, you need to create an account on the Nexus Mods site. Account creation is free, although there are limits placed on free accounts. For instance, download speed is capped if you don't pay for a premium account.
All of the Skyrim mods on the Nexus Mods site are free, and you are not required to pay any money or provide any billing information during the registration process.
The first step is to download and install the Nexus Mod Manager:
- Navigate to nexusmods.com and create an account. You do not need to pay to create an account. If you do not wish to pay, do not select any of the payment options during the registration process.
- Wait for Nexus Mod Manager to locate your copy of Skyrim.Nexus Mod Manager searches for over a dozen different games. Once it has located Skyrim, you can click Stop Searching if you don't have the other games.
- Click the green check mark to confirm the location of your copy of Skyrim. If Nexus Mod Manager locates multiple games, you must click each green check mark to proceed.
- Select Skyrim or Skyrim: Special Edition, and click OK.
- Select the location where you would like to store the mods that you download, and click Finish.
- If another window pops up, click OK.
- Change the location where mods are stored, or just click Finish.
After you install Nexus Mod Manager, you need to dig in and find some mods for it to manage. This is done through the same Nexus Mod site where you made an account and downloaded the manager software.
The next step is to locate and download Skyrim mods from the Nexus Mods site, and use Nexus Mod Manager to install them:
- Navigate to nexusmods.com/skyrim.
- Locate a mod that you are interested in, and click on it.
- Click on the Files tab.
- Click on Download with Manager.
- Wait for the mod to download in Nexus Mod Manager. You may need to authorize Nexus Mod Manager to make changes to your system. If it fails, try running Nexus Mod Manager as an administrator.
- In the Nexus Mod Manager client, select a mod that you have downloaded, and click the green check mark on the left to install.
- Wait for the mod to install.
- Repeat steps 2-7 to install any other mods you would like to use.
- Click Launch Skyrim.
You can download and install as many mods as you want with Nexus Mod Manager. In fact, it's literally possible to run hundreds of Skyrim mods at the same time. However, adding too many mods can slow the game down, and some mods don't work well with each other.
If you find that your game doesn't run well, or that it doesn't launch at all, use Nexus Mod Manager to change the load order of your mods. In some cases, changing the load order will make them work well together or run more optimally.
If that doesn't work, then the next step is to use Nexus Mod Manager to disable mods until your game starts working again.
How to Install Skyrim or Skyrim: Special Edition Mods on PC Using Steam Workshop
Steam is a service that allows you to purchase games, download mods, and play online with your friends. If you own either Skyrim or Skyrim: Special Edition on Steam, then the absolute easiest way to install mods is to go right through Steam's own workshop.
Owners of the Steam versions of Skyrim can use mods from both Nexus Mods and Steam Workshop, and owners of the Steam version of Skyrim: Special Edition can use mods from Nexus Mods, Bethesda.net, and Steam Workshop. Using mods from multiple sources works fine in some cases, but you may experience undesired effects.
Here are the steps you need to take to install mods for Skyrim or Skyrim: Special Edition via the Steam Workshop:
- Launch your Steam client and log into your account.
- Click Library.
- Locate The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim or The Elder Scrolls: Special Edition in the games list on the left side of the client and click the one you wish to mod.
- Click Community Hub in the Links section on the right side of the client.
- Click on the Workshop tab.
- Click on any mod that you want to install.
- Click Subscribe to install the mod.
You may need to close Skyrim and launch it again to successfully install your mods. Some Steam Workshop mods and mods from other sources may not work well together.
Bethesda has re-released Skyrim for every electronic device in living history, including the trusty microwave. As for the Special Edition on PC, many wondered why the company even bothered since graphics are only marginally better, but what makes this latest version so good is the addition of 64-bit support. This unlocks the full potential of Skyrim and its modding community, enabling for a more stable experience. We'll show you how to install mods and completely change Skyrim.

How to install mods for Skyrim Special Edition
In this guide, we'll be using Vortex (previously called Nexus Mod Manager), which is universally recommended to keep things organized and to make installing larger packages an absolute breeze. Nexus is a dedicated platform for modders to release and update their mods for various titles, including Skyrim Special Edition. As well as publishing their content, Nexus also enables for discussion, feedback, support, and more. The website is fairly easy to navigate with most mods correctly categorized for convenient filtering.
Installing Vortex
- Register an account on the Nexus website.
- Download Vortex (Nexus Mod Manager).
- Install and then run Vortex.
- Confirm the location of Skyrim Special Edition.
- Select Skyrim Special Edition.
- Hit OK.
- Choose where you wish to store downloaded mods (default drive is the one with Skyrim SE installed).
- Hit OK if an alert window shows.
We need to run Skyrim SE to the main menu before activating mods, so give the game a boot to initial menu and then quit. This will create the much-needed .ini file for editing and will ensure we don't run into issues with mods not working correctly at a later date.
Installing Mods
Now it's time to select and install some mods. We rounded up some of our favorite Skyrim mods to get you started.
- Search for mods on the Nexus website.
- Carefully read through the description of each mod.
- Choose the Files tab.
- Select 'Download with Manager' on the correct file(s) you need for the mod.
- Wait for the mods to download in Vortex.
- Select a mod you wish to install and choose 'Install'.
Once you have a few mods downloaded you may notice the load order start to populate. This list is important because some mods and files need to be loaded by the game in a specific order. Mod authors generally offer information in mod descriptions on the Nexus should their files require to be configured in a set order, and there are even tools available like LOOT that can check to see if there are any problems with your setup.
Modders create and release extra content for fun and for the love of scripting, but leaving an endorsement or even a donation can provide much-needed feedback, especially if you've enjoyed hours of entertainment because of said mod(s). Leaving a few dollars can really make their day, but do consider at least leaving a comment and endorsing their work. Skyrim wouldn't be the same without its excellent modding community.
